DEVONthink

Document and information manager for Mac and iOS with local, indexed databases

Databases live on your own disk and take PDFs, email, web archives and any other file you put in them. DEVONthink indexes the text, scanned pages included once OCR has run, and its classification engine suggests where a new document belongs and which existing files relate to it. Each item gets a stable link. You can paste that into a task or a note. Researchers, lawyers and writers use it as a searchable archive that keeps working with no cloud service behind it.

Who backs it

Sorted by strength of stance

  • Apple productivity writer · MacSparky

Every work file goes into DEVONthink databases, a choice he says has stayed the same forever. Whatever arrives lands in a system that hands him a link straight back to it. He tried Finder and other tools, and says nothing came close.

  • Technology writer · 512 Pixels and Relay

Files a lot of computer history material in DEVONthink, which his apps list puts under research tools rather than notes.
