Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's 1990 study of total absorption and what makes it happen
Csikszentmihalyi spent decades asking surgeons, climbers, chess players and factory workers about the moments when work absorbed them completely. Time distorted. Self-consciousness dropped away. He named the state flow and argued it needs three things: clear goals, immediate feedback and a challenge that matches skill. Athletes and business readers usually take one line from the book above the rest, that meaning comes when values, attention and action all point the same way. It is dense in places, and the research chapters reward a slow read.

On a flight in late 2025 he read Csikszentmihalyi's book. He copied lines out of it. One of them, on meaning coming from values, attention and actions pointing the same way, became the theme of his plans for 2026.

He credits Flow with making the greatest impression on him of any book he read that year, and takes from Csikszentmihalyi the claim that happiness follows from how attention is managed. Applied to lifting, it means going deeper into a skill rather than broader.
