Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me)
Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson on self-justification
Tavris and Aronson wrote a social psychology book about the machinery that stops people admitting error. Cognitive dissonance and memory come first. Prosecutors who will not revisit convictions come next, along with therapists defending discredited methods, doctors, couples and politicians. Self-justification does more damage than lying, the authors argue, because the person doing it has already convinced themselves.
