Rowing machine

Indoor rower for whole-body conditioning, often in short timed pieces

An indoor rower with a flywheel or water tank that loads every stroke: legs drive, body swings, arms finish. It works most of the body at once, is easy on the joints and gives an honest number, since the monitor reports meters, split times and watts. Common uses are short hard pieces such as a 2,000 meter row or a seven-minute effort, long steady rows for aerobic base, and intervals. Form matters more than on a bike or treadmill, and the machine is usually free at the gym for a reason. A good one costs about as much as a mid-range bicycle.

His desert-island pick. A trainer who had rowed told him to row when the director of Australia needed him lean a month out: seven minutes, four times a week, aiming at 2,000 meters. Add some chest work and push-ups, he says, and that covers fit, healthy and strong. He warns you will hate him for it.
