Awareness
Anthony de Mello's talks on waking up, mostly about beliefs you never examined
De Mello was a Jesuit priest from India who ran retreats, and the book comes out of those talks, so it reads as speech rather than argument. His subject is the difference between changing your circumstances and changing what you believe about them. He is blunt about how little most people want to hear it. Chapters are short and repetitive on purpose. Readers who like it say the repetition is the mechanism; readers who do not usually put it down in the first twenty pages.

Asked where someone should start with the philosophy he reads, he names Anthony de Mello and calls him fantastic. A Way to Love or Awareness, either one. He adds that none of it is worth picking up unless self-reflection is something you actually want to do.
