Endurance
Shackleton's 1914 Antarctic expedition, from the ship breaking up to the rescue
Alfred Lansing rebuilt the story from the diaries of the men who were there. The ship crushed by pack ice, twenty months on the floes and in open boats, and every one of the crew alive at the end. Readers take it now as a book about leadership and what people can take. Lansing wrote narrative history, though, and mostly stays out of it.
