Permission Marketing
The 1999 book arguing for messages people actually asked to receive
Godin wrote it when email marketing barely existed as a business. The starting point is simple. Attention is finite, and interrupting strangers gets more expensive every year. He sets out an alternative in three words, anticipated, personal and relevant, with messages going only to people who opted in and free to leave whenever they like. Newsletters, subscription lists and the whole opt-in habit of the web follow that shape. It was his first book under his own name, and a New York Times bestseller. Then he stopped writing for a year.

Wrote it when email marketing was not yet an industry at all, as he tells it. He still stands behind the core of the argument: connection is the building block of the internet, and messaging works when it is anticipated, personal and relevant.
