The Intelligent Investor
Benjamin Graham's 1949 classic on value investing and the moods of Mr. Market
Benjamin Graham's book for ordinary investors, first published in 1949 and still in print with commentary by Jason Zweig. Its two most-cited chapters are 8, which introduces Mr. Market, an obliging partner who shows up every day offering to buy or sell at whatever mood he is in, and 20, on the margin of safety. The argument is that a stock is a piece of a business, that price swings are opportunities rather than information, and that temperament matters more than intellect. Readers usually skip the dated chapters on bonds and read the two that everyone quotes.

Buying Ben Graham's book was the best investment he ever made, he wrote in the 2013 letter, his two marriage licenses excepted. He cannot remember the price. Whatever he paid for that first copy, he says, would prove Graham's adage that price is what you pay and value is what you get.
