The Underground Railroad
Colson Whitehead's novel of Cora's escape from a Georgia plantation
Whitehead's 2016 novel follows Cora, a third-generation enslaved woman in Georgia, as she runs north on a railroad that is literally underground: engines, tracks and station agents instead of a network of safe houses. Every state she reaches works as a different version of America. It won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and it was an Oprah's Book Club pick the summer it came out.

Picked it for her book club in 2016 having never read Colson Whitehead before. The first sentence hooked her, she wrote, and she describes finding herself feeling what Cora feels and being horrified by slavery all over again.
