The Untethered Soul
Michael Singer on the voice in your head, and what changes when you stop believing it
Singer's argument is that the constant narration in your head is not you, and that most anxiety comes from taking it at face value. The book's best-known image is of the mind as a roommate who never stops talking and would be intolerable in any other setting. From there it works through watching thoughts without arguing with them. It is short and plain. Plenty of readers use it as a first step into meditation, without the framing of a practice.

The crazy roommate image he uses for the voice in his head came from Michael Singer, and he calls this a good book. What he takes from it is that your own thoughts deserve the same skepticism you would apply to a stranger talking at you.
