Deadlift
Pulling a loaded barbell off the floor to a standing lockout
A bar on the ground, gripped and stood up with, hips and back doing most of the work. It is the plainest test of whole-body pulling strength and the lift most often used to measure it, in competition and out. Training usually means low reps, sets of five or fewer, organized into cycles that start light and build toward a target date, usually over two or three months. Technique carries more weight here than on most lifts, because the load is heavy and the spine is the link everything else runs through.

His father Vladimir pulled another American record at 75, and the program he coaches him on is published in full: deadlifts twice a week, one light and one heavy, plus parallel grip pull-ups, hanging leg raises, fist push-ups and goblet squats. The cycle is Marty Gallagher inspired, worked back six to twelve weeks from a target on the last heavy day.
