Endurance carbohydrate fueling
Carbohydrate drink and electrolytes taken by the hour on long efforts, rehearsed first
Eating and drinking to a plan during long runs, rides and races, instead of hoping breakfast carries you. Carbohydrate mix in the bottles, added sodium, gels or real food on a timer, all of it tested in training first. Skip it and you bonk: glycogen runs out, pace collapses, the finish turns into damage control. Fluid is the other half of the job. Drinking gallons of plain water thins out the sodium that is left and invites cramp, so the two travel together.

Fueling is not something you pull out on race day, he writes; he rehearses the plan on long runs first. At Leadville that meant a carbohydrate and electrolyte mix every hour alongside bars, gels, salt tabs and peanut butter sandwiches. The drink mixes are his own company's.
