Pegan diet

Plant-rich plate with quality protein and fats, low in sugar and refined starch

Mark Hyman's own label, a portmanteau of paleo and vegan that he uses for a plant-rich rather than plant-based way of eating. Roughly three quarters of the plate is vegetables, mostly non-starchy and as colorful as possible, with meat, fish or eggs kept to a side portion, plenty of nuts, seeds and olive oil, and sugar and refined flour treated as occasional treats. Grains, beans and starchy vegetables are allowed in amounts that depend on the person's metabolic health. The framing is food as information for the body rather than a calorie count, and followers adjust the details to their own blood work.

The label is his own for a plant-rich, food-as-medicine way of eating, high in phytochemicals and with what he calls the right amount of protein for his age, since he argues older people need more to hold muscle. Nutrition sits at the base of his longevity plan.
