Self-coached contest prep
Setting your own calories, cardio and peak week instead of hiring a prep coach
Most competitors pay someone to set calories, call cardio and decide the last week before a show. Self-coached athletes do all of it themselves, judging condition from the mirror and the scale rather than sending check-in photos and waiting on a reply. Speed and ownership are the arguments for it. A decision lands the same day it is made, nothing gets lost in translation, and the athlete keeps the reasoning instead of renting it. Against that sits the obvious problem: nobody sees their own physique clearly, and the final fortnight is exactly where an outside eye earns its money. Judges and veteran coaches tend to push newer pros toward help for that reason. Lifters who take this route anyway usually have years of their own tracked data to read, and a stubborn streak.

He ran his first pro prep without a coach, because looking in the mirror is a quicker check-in than texting someone and waiting for a reply. He is careful to add that he is not claiming it is better, only that it is how he wants to do it.

For me, to coach myself, it keeps it more simple. I don’t have to send somebody my check-ins, and it’s way quicker. I can just look at myself in the mirror. That’s my check-in.”
