Triathlon training

Swim, bike and run sessions fitted into one training week

Three sports sharing one calendar, which is what makes the training awkward rather than hard. A week has to hold swim sessions, rides and runs, plus brick workouts where a run starts straight off the bike so the legs learn what that feels like. Race distances run from sprint, about an hour, up to Ironman at eight hours and beyond. Most age-group athletes train five or six days a week and point the year at one or two target races. Volume is the obvious cost. The quieter one is equipment, because every leg brings its own.

Signed up for a half Ironman before he had swum a single lap, by his own telling, and worked backwards from there through a sprint and an Olympic race. Ironman Canada followed the next year with help from a local coach, Alan Melvin, then Ironman Florida. He has sprinkled marathons and shorter races in since.
