Rehearsing a performance in your head before you do it for real

Running a performance in the head before doing it for real: one specific scene, held in as much sensory detail as possible, from the sound of the room to the exact movement wanted. Athletes use it before competition, musicians before a recital, speakers before a talk. Sessions tend to be short, five or ten minutes, and repetition matters more than length. Sport psychologists have studied it since the 1970s and mostly find it works as a supplement to real practice rather than a substitute. Some people fold it into a meditation session; others keep it as its own block, often the night before or an hour out.
