Psych

Judd Biasiotto on the mental training behind record-setting powerlifting

Biasiotto was a small, unremarkable athlete who squatted more than four times his bodyweight, and he puts the gap down to what happened between his ears. The book works through arousal control, imagery, self-talk and the knack of switching on hard for an attempt and switching off completely afterwards. Short, written for lifters rather than psychologists, it circulates in strength circles mostly by word of mouth.

One book gets named when he is asked about the on and off switch: Psych, by Judd Biasiotto, a lifter who by his own admission looked like an eleven-year-old stamp collector and squatted over 600 pounds at a bodyweight of 132. Biasiotto slept between attempts, woke, worked himself into a frenzy and lifted, which is the switch control he wants readers to study.
