Headlamp
Head-worn light for training or racing before dawn and after dark
A light on an elastic strap that leaves both hands free, running off replaceable batteries or a rechargeable cell. Lumens get quoted on the box, but beam shape and how long the output holds before it fades matter more. Anyone who trains early, or races through a night, owns one and usually a spare set of batteries.

A hundred miles in the Rockies runs into the dark, so headlamps and batteries both went on his Leadville kit list. He describes laying the whole lot out in the days before the race and checking the lamps worked, along with the flasks and the poles.
