Portable audio recorder

Handheld recorder that captures sound apart from the camera

A pocket recorder that writes audio to a memory card, either through its own built-in mics or from a lapel mic plugged into it. Keeping sound separate from picture raises quality and frees the speaker to move away from the camera. You pay for that in a syncing step later, and in the chance of setting input levels wrong and distorting a take you cannot redo.

  • Productivity writer · Building a Second Brain

Bought a Zoom H1n on a videographer friend's recommendation and paired it with a lav mic so he could record audio wirelessly. He says he would use it again, then flags his own error: trusting the auto-levels left the opening seconds of many clips peaked and distorted, which he says you can only partly fix after the fact.
